Cristiano Ronaldo: Barcelona vs Real Madrid, La Liga 2011–12, 21 April 2012

It’s a goal worthy of a Liga trophy. It’s 8.00pm at the Nou Camp. For the first time since La Liga 2008–09, the Whites have made it to the end of the season ahead of the Blaugrana. They are four points clear of Guardiola’s team, 85 to 81, enough to seal the championship at the home of their rivals and end Barça’s incredible three-season run. All the attention is on Ronaldo and Messi. ‘The battle for La Liga isn’t about two teams, it’s about two players,’ claims Barça sports paper Sport. And it’s not hard to see why: Ronaldo and Messi’s performances have carried their teams this year. In 32 Liga matches, they have each scored 41 goals, equalling Ronaldo’s 2010–11 record. ‘You’ve never seen anything like it. Never has La Liga had two such phenomenal players,’ continues Sport. With the exception of the 2011 Copa del Rey final, Ronaldo has generally lost up until now when going head to head with Messi – be it at Man United or Real. But on this occasion it’s a different story, as he proves decisive. He scores the winner in the 2–1 victory, putting Mourinho’s team seven points clear of their rivals. It’s enough to ensure the title win. The goal comes in the 73rd minute, shortly after the equaliser from Alexis Sánchez, breaking the flow of Barça’s attempted comeback. Mesut Özil gets the ball from Di María in front of the halfway line and crosses deep towards Cristiano. He breaks away from Mascherano and approaches Víctor Valdés. He sends the ball to the right, beating the goalie at the near post. It’s an incredible shot, and he celebrates by running towards the Barça fans, signalling for them to calm down, mimicking the gesture Raúl once made towards them. ‘Calm down, calm down, I’m right here,’ he shouts, only too aware of what the goal symbolises. At the press conference afterwards he says: ‘It was an important goal, but the team’s victory as a whole was more important.’ He has scored once again at the Nou Camp, playing a crucial role in breaking Real’s three-year drought. And as far as the Madrid press are concerned, he has finally dethroned Messi.
